CL’d, but bringing this over from the last topic:

RIP Stan Lee. Say what you want of him, but he was a man who was always ahead of the curve, and knew that ‘staying in his lane’ was never the moral choice when it came to using his platform for the right things:

re: #1 Citizen K

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby both looked towards a more inclusive and accepting society.

So many of the characters they wrote - the story arcs - the very history in which they set their characters - was based on civility and acceptance.

X Men? Yeah, persecution of the other. Magneto’s background included explicit Holocaust references.
Black Panther.

The list goes on and on.

Lee and Kirby weren’t perfect and they weren’t always open to getting women and minorities into important roles behind the pen and ink, and that’s to their detriment.

But we’re now seeing that inclusiveness and equal rights and protections is an eternal fight - and it needs to keep being fought to protect.

Well well well…this is interesting. Not only was Woodfill the former head of the Harris County GOP, he was also the partner in a law firm with former judge Paul Pressler, who is known for being one of the fomenters of the so-called Southern Baptist “Conservative Resurgence.”

There was a lawsuit, recently dismissed, which accused Pressler of sexually assaulting young men.

However, Jared Woodfill was one of the men behind the so-called “bathroom bill” and he has it in for transgender people. It warms the cockles of my cold, cold heart that his office is being shaken down right now. Who knows what they will find?

Everytime I look at a place in which I have lived, in which I helped make better by careful landscape planting of quality plants (such as excellent rose gardens), I see the recent owners have tore up all the landscaping and gone with one or two token palms (which are not trees) and some gravel/bark spread… it just makes me sad.

This is (one of many) real problems with San Diego and property and such: people don’t appreciate anything that takes any time or effort.

That’s why we have such poor quality of housing stock.

Part of the source of this problem is that a great many people don’t look at a place as, well, a place, to live and maybe even die.

It’s all about just flipping and flipping and flipping… in the (almost always) vain attempt at finally landing in a place like Rancho Santa Fe.

I consider this a social problem as big as anything else, because it is this flippant flipping which is why so many places lack a sense of community. And without a community the whole thing falls apart.

Last week, Mrs. FBW and I were watching TV, when we heard an odd sound, like bubbling. Turns out Dory was shoving her muzzle into her water bowl (plain white) and blowing bubbles. There wasn’t anything in the bowl but water, so she wasn’t trying to reach something at the bottom. Just blowing bubbles.

Which actually seems to give the lie, somewhat, to the stories that were circulating ahead of the election saying that it would take a 12 or 13-point popular vote lead to yield the 23-seat flip the Democrats would need to take the House.

It would be interesting to see some after-the-fact analysis to sort out how we got 30+ seats with 6.7%.

Many subdivisions don’t even have sidewalks so there’s no incentive to even walk around and talk to anyone. Lots of homes have entryways and not porches. When people spend time outside, it’s in the backyard or at a park, but not meeting your neighbors and saying hi, unless the kids go to school together or you end up at the same church. I’m generalizing, but it is a design flaw in how we make neighborhoods. They aren’t very neighborly sometimes.

I grew up in a small town of front porches, back when nobody had A/C so they’d sit out in the evening. I don’t remember people meeting their neighbors, or doing more than grunting back at you if you walked by and said hello.

Mind you, it might just be they didn’t like ME.

I think it didn’t take into account how the suburbs swung against Trump, and perhaps assumed a more or less homogeneous movement of all groups by the same percentage, which would have had that result. As it was, the ‘Trumpy’ areas stayed Trumpy, but the areas where he lost or was close to losing swung a lot.

I was discussing this with Mrs. FBW the other day. Gerrymandering for the GOP is to create a few deep, deep blue districts and a lot of reddish-purple districts that almost never dip below 50% for Republicans.

ALMOST never.

But they made a lot of them from Republican LEANING suburbs, and Trump drove college-educated whites, especially women, away by doing his campaign as “All Base All The Time”.

I think that’s a pretty decent analysis. I wonder, too, if the analysts didn’t fully factor in the PA un-gerrymandering - I know I saw a few (Harry Enten at 538?) trying to do at least some accounting for its effects.

It does. Not sure where that is. Rural and small town folks like to think they’re friendly and suburban and urban folks are not, but the former tend to be friendly with the people they know. The latter? When we lived in San Francisco, we were friends with the neighbors - the old lady next door, and the alcoholic chainsmoking ex-Army lesbians who rented the upstairs flat from her; the glazier across the street, who gave us two 3’x5’ sheets of glass for free for a flight cage for our finches, and helped mount them. And now in our current spot, we just had a block party where the folks who came hung out for hours, but most folks on the block didn’t. People are people wherever you go.

The area where I grew up was all families who’d been there 150-200 years, and everyone was related. And their names all ended in -baugh.

Us? We moved there. We were outsiders all the time I was there.

Even our little three-district state is gerrymandered. After NE-2 went for Obama in 2008 (giving him one electoral vote from our state), redistricting changed NE-2 to include large swaths of my district (NE-3, otherwise known as “the rural area”). The same was done with NE-1 (Lincoln) because it was close there.

So now our three districts look like concentric half-circles around Omaha.

I got a notice from FB one day that they’d reviewed a comment of mine (“The loudest howler monkeys have the smallest balls”) and determined it had violated their rules on hate speech, so it wouldn’t be visible.

I’d made the comment about 2 months before.

So I clicked the button for review.

Three weeks later they came back and said they’d reviewed it and the decision stands.

I commented, “Do any of you actually READ Facebook?”

But getting a bill passed is probably less of a priority here than getting the issue out in front of the Congress/public/media. Making the Republicans overtly come out and oppose a voters-rights bill might be as satisfactory an outcome as one is likely to get in the 116th Congress. It would, of course, need a concerted campaign by Dems to finally stake the shambling-undead issue of “voter fraud” that the GOP has used as a one-lie-fits-all “rationale” to excuse their own enshrinement of fraud as policy for years: but at least it would be a start.

They reportedly did to Manafort.

It’s a logical prosecution tactic when you have a someone over a barrel and want to push them towards becoming a cooperating witness. According to Preet Bharara different offices will approach it differently, his old office liked to formally charging cooperating with everything and then tell the judge at sentencing how much they helped the government, so that juries see everything and speculate less about hidden agendas. Other offices are sometimes more willing to cut deals up front and it’s hard to know exactly which way Muller’s team is going until we see Flynn’s final paperwork.

Found it.

Election officials in a Florida county battered by Hurricane Michael last month allowed about 150 displaced voters to cast ballots by email, even though it’s not allowed under state law.

The Miami Herald reports that Bay County Supervisor of Elections Mark Andersen defended that decision Monday.

Andersen told the newspaper that parts of the county remained shut off by law enforcement, preventing people from reaching their homes. The displaced voters were allowed to scan and email their ballots to the elections office. Andersen said all the ballots were verified by signature.

i get what the voters tried to do

this is 100% on the supervisor of elections.
these ballots are no more acceptable than if written on a napkin and hand delivered

wtf were they thinking?
casue if these are accepted due to some sort of extreme emergency exception then waht about all those stuck in the postal system that didnt get there in time due to a different extreme emergency situation?

Proof that the President is right; the voting is too corrupted by illegal votes to do a recount!//

I told one of my Republican coworkers that one of the things I have to be proud of as a Democrat is that with the percentage of white males in the Democratic side of the House almost matching the population, the House is a lot closer to representing America. He immediately tried to counter with wondering if white women had the same percentage, but even he knew it was a weak argument. As we agreed at the end, it’s a whole lot easier to deal with the people’s problems when they have a seat.

They should require uniform early voting as well. This effectively makes our election a multi-day event, and, with a country our size, it’s important.

I have been thinking for awhile that perhaps polling places should be open 24 x 7 for the week leading up to the election. Except for those who are ill or out of the country, this type of schedule should accommodate almost every voter and every schedule. Obviously there would have to be multiple citizens working as judges over that period. It certainly appears that sufficient mail-in ballots are being discarded or ignored or rejected to affect the outcome of races in states like Georgia and Florida (and probably others)

Any idea what Jerome Corsi did to begin falling into a perjury trap?

I know he is scum, but I can’t seem to remember what he would have done to get involved with Stone and to fall into the clutches of Mueller.

Maybe he tried to misdirect the probe or made false testimony that he knew something Stone did couldn’t have been done because he was just trying cover for him.

But I am glad to see Corsi sweat.

Make sure early voting polling places are available for all. Here is Columbus we have Ohio early voting period which ran two weeks or so.

But, the Franklin County Board of Elections is up in the northern section of Columbus and might not be easy to get to for everyone in the county especially those that would have either transportation or mobility issues, etc.

We would should have for locations to cover North, South, East and West.

Here in Japan, elections are always on Sundays, to make it easier for most people to vote. Even so, voting turnout is not impressive at all. (I suspect the LDP’s grip on power over the last several decades plays an important role in that, but who knows?)

Anyway, now they’re cranking up efforts to open voting places in train stations and shopping malls to hopefully drive up participation.

re: #53 Anymouse ??

Even our little three-district state is gerrymandered. After NE-2 went for Obama in 2008 (giving him one electoral vote from our state), redistricting changed NE-2 to include large swaths of my district (NE-3, otherwise known as “the rural area”). The same was done with NE-1 (Lincoln) because it was close there.

So now our three districts look like concentric half-circles around Omaha.

Wisconsin is horribly gerrimandered. Every statewide office went Democrat in the last two elections (this fall and the previous spring elections) but almost no change in the state house. But we won in the nick of time to change that.

mmmirele  Nov 12, 2018 • 4:49:52pm

Jackass pastor John Lindell of James River Church in Springfield, Missouri, preached a sermon just before Halloween where he said

that the positions in yoga were “created with demonic intent to open you up to demonic power because Hinduism is demonic.”

He can believe what he wants. But this is the impact of this bullshit.

A Christian yogi says his practice has brought him closer to God and wants others to know that it’s possible to do sun salutations while following Christ. One owner of a yoga studio said she’s worried that small local businesses are being hurt. An instructor, feeling on edge after a Florida yoga studio was shot up last week, can’t shake a fear that someone might take the church’s anti-yoga message too far.

*snip*

Last Monday morning, only one person showed up to Heather Worthy’s yoga class. Her night class only had four people.

At the Republic gym where she teaches, the words “yoga classes” used to be featured on the front door. By Monday, those words had been taken down, even though she’s still leading yoga classes.

Worthy said many people at the gym are active members of James River Church, and she speculated that Lindell’s sermon had an impact on them.

“It hurt,” she said. “It could have been a coincidence, but it’s interesting.”

*snip*

Wubbena told the News-Leader her main concern is that the sermon is “going after small businesses.”

“This is our sole source of livelihood,” Wubbena said. “One yoga studio lost over 10 members the Monday after the sermon.”

news-leader.com

I’ve been needing to go back to yoga class. I should go and then tell this John Lindell fella that his sermon made me go back to yoga class. Oh, and it’s not like this church was any sort of wonderful before. After Mark Driscoll abandoned his megachurch in Seattle (leading to its implosion), James River Church was one of the churches he preached at before he set up his cult in Scottsdale. So they’re already bad actors.

McSally is being nice because there’s another senate seat that will come open soonish (the one that John Kyl has his butt warming). If she wants to woo independents to support her, she’s got to keep her rhetoric calm.

On the other hand, I’m just waiting for the short-fingered vulgarian to get hold of his phone tomorrow morning and start tweeting out inanities.

It’s only because she’s trying to keep her image decent for when she runs for the rest of McCain’s term in 2020.

Arizona Republic seems to think Kyl may not serve past the end of the year. There’s a column on the website suggesting Ducey appoint McSally if/when Kyl steps down before the election

Agreed. But even the idea of a possible Whitaker recusal is likely to send the orange baby into a meltdown.

There’s serious reason to believe that poorly maintained SCE equipment sparked both the Woolsey fire while PG&E equipment caused the Camp fire disaster in Paradise. These two private utility companies have killed a frightening number of Californians over the years and the State government should consider nationalizing them into a single publicly owned utility. It would also be a nice way to turn the tables on Trump and the flagrant lie that State and local land management is to blame by opening a criminal investigation into the actual cause.

while i and most here would agree with you 100%
they do see it as an agenda…

tolerance is a way to force people to see and accept things they’d rather not even think about

Unless you live in a city or town with only one race/religion/sexual orientation, you’ll have to figure out how to get along with diverse people. It’s not an agenda to say that you have to tolerate differences. It’s a fact. Otherwise you need to move to somewhere with no diversity.

hey you dont have to convince me…..

- there are intolerant (ok bigoted) people everywhere - even in big cities, in fact especially in and around lots of big cities
- they dont get along - they dont mix, socialize, understand
- in fact these folks are trying to find ways how to not get along with diverse people - ie cakes, marriage licenses (davis), pharmacies, and lots of other whatnot
- i know it wasnt freudian — live / love - it works both ways

It really seems as though if it weren’t for Trump’s brilliant handling of the initial Kavanaugh debacle, the Dems may have taken the Senate too. But who knows what would have happened if the Ford allegation had never been made public. We would still have Kavanaugh on the Court.

If that were to happen, McSally would become Arizona’s senior senator because she’d take office immediately while Sinema will have to wait until January. Strange, eh?

In other late-counting news, pseudo-Democrat Tony Thurmond has edged ahead of quasi-Republican Marshall Tuck to become California’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, while GOoPer Mimi Walters’ lead in the 45th District has been slashed to 1,000 votes and Repub Young Kim’s lead in the 39th District is now under 2,000.

It was a move facilitated by pure power and ignoring new facts.

I know the word can be used in this case, but it sure makes me cringe when brilliant is used to describe what the Senate Judicial Committee pulled forcing Kavanaugh through.

It was basically foretold to everyone by McConnell when he said Kavanaugh would be nominated and voted in…before the hearings really got under way.

So, you know, maybe instead of letting him get away with hiding and hunching over his phone, tweeting while watching Fox “news,” someone can actually get this fuckin’ fraud of a man to pretend he gives a shit about something other than himself. Hell, by this point in his presidency, Barack Obama had visited troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, actual war zones.

Spiderman was the first superhero comic I fell in love with. Some people who had rented our house for the summer had left a bunch of Spiderman and Captain America comics. I like CA a lot too, especially since it was the story line with “The Falcon” (first black superhero I had ever seen!) but Spidey was the one I latched on to and followed for a long time.

I had previously only been a Caspar, Wendy, Richie Rich, Archie kinda fan. :D
