We don’t have independent confirmation of this report yet, but today in McClatchy: Michael Cohen’s cell phone briefly activated near Prague around time of purported Russia meeting.

If this pans out, it will corroborate one more piece of information in the now-famous dossier on Donald Trump’s Russian connections compiled by British intelligence officer Christopher Steele. Trump and his cronies frequently call the dossier a “fake,” a “hoax” and “a pile of garbage,” but to date, none of the information in this document has been disproven — and many of the most important parts have been shown to be accurate.

WASHINGTON — A mobile phone traced to President Donald Trump’s former lawyer and “fixer” Michael Cohen briefly sent signals ricocheting off cell towers in the Prague area in late summer 2016, at the height of the presidential campaign, leaving an electronic record to support claims that Cohen met secretly there with Russian officials, four people with knowledge of the matter say.

John Solomon was recently moved to the Opinion section of The Hill after being repeatedly criticized by his colleagues for leaving out inconvenient details in his stories, such as the fact that Lisa Page and Peter Strzok were highly critical of Hillary Clinton in their personal texts. So who better to massage Rudy’s rantings into a coherent narrative that promotes the batshit theory that Robert Mueller personally deleted Page and Strzok’s personal messages because he was OMG, HIDING SOMETHING!

You really get the feeling that the market does not know what it wants to do. And if there’s a crash/recession, I feel like it’s going to be 1000 times worse with Trump constantly tweet blaming everyone else for it.

There’s probably some truth to that, but we’ve also see the market whipsaw for the last year or so. Investors/businesses either haven’t adapted to Trump or the economy is starting to overheat a bit (which seems to be the Fed’s read, thus their moves on interest rates). If the economy slows and the market takes a sustained hit, Trump’s lack of impulse control and general stupidity is going to make things much worse than they’d be with someone who wasn’t, well, Trump.

Just a reminder, when Trump says we need the Artisan Steel Slats to stop the evil drugs from coming in, he’s also responsible for this:

The Coast Guard is the only branch of the military directly affected by the partial shutdown that began Saturday because it’s funded through the Department of Homeland Security. The other branches receive their money through Department of Defense appropriations, which were signed into law in September.

With the DHS funding lapsed, roughly 44,000 active-duty Coast Guard members will be working without paychecks until Congress and the White House reach a deal to reopen the government and provide back pay.

Another 6,000 Coast Guard employees are being furloughed, according to DHS guidance. That means they won’t be working and any pay for the shutdown period would have to come retroactively, through an act of Congress.

The Coast Guard stops a lot of drug smuggling since there is a lot more coastline than border. Also, who thought it was a good idea to move a branch of the military to DHS instead of the DoD? (I still really dislike DHS and think that all the agencies within it should be moved back to their old Departments, but I think that ship has sailed)

Reminder:

The Steele Dossier is a collection of raw data points. It’s the data, and was meant to identify patterns, and prepare a detailed analysis. It is not the analysis itself.

So far, most of the raw data points have been corroborated. Some of the points raised in the dossier are still open to further analysis, pending further actual data.

But by and large, the dossier points to Russia’s sway and influence of multiple persons within Trumpworld. It points to the connections and the subsequent lies by Trumpworld to cover up those connections. The lies themselves also show just how much Trumpworld has to lose by seeing those connections revealed.

re: #24 Eclectic Cyborg

The market is chaotic because the country is chaotic and the country is chaotic because the government is chaotic.

And no one that can do anything about it has chosen to do so.

The market’s whipsawing back and forth because of conflicting data points and inputs.

Trump’s tax scam hasn’t goosed the economy (down).
Businesses still seeing record profits (up)
Workers wages stagnant or declining (down).
Unemployment rates (up and down)
Need for correction after runup (down).
Trump statements attacking Fed chair … that he picked (way down).
Mnuchin trying to calm markets (still more down than up).
Bargain hunting (up).

Back and forth we go, and the trick isn’t to focus as much on the point totals, but the percentage moves since as the market has gone higher, the gains and losses appear bigger (hence 1000 point gain), but that doesn’t represent nearly as much on a percentage gain as say 500 points from a few years ago.

I just don’t see the point in attacking Melania for a photo shoot she did, as a professional model, while pregnant.

Meanwhile, the Iraqis apparently don’t want Trump there either:

That visit and the US troop presence were denounced on Thursday by parliament members, major Iraqi political parties and key players in the current Iraqi government.

“Trump should know that Iraq is not an American state and Iraqi prime minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi should bear responsibility,” Iraqi lawmaker Faleh al-Khazali said in a statement.

“We demand all US troops to leave Iraq and Iraqi government should consider them as occupiers.”

Ahmed al-Assadi, another Iraqi lawmaker, said that “the demand for the withdrawal of American forces has become a basic requirement that must be implemented as soon as possible.”

I’m sure Trump will have a reasoned and thoughtful response to this.

They’re going to complain about almost anything a Democratic president (or nominee) has done in their life; and when that doesn’t work, they’ll complain about things their spouse did. And all the while, they’ll excuse their own side.

It’s stupid and petty. But that’s what the GOP has become, stupid and petty. The only people who buy it are the true believers who want to believe it. Better to just point and laugh at their fauxrage and move on to important things. Let them wallow in their own shallow pools of stupid and petty.

Medical malpractice. And under the circumstances, punitive damages could be awarded given that it was purposeful and with malice. Points to the serious hack gap between the GOP and the Democrats. There are lots of rightwing hacks eager to go apoplectic on almost anything a Democratic President or nominee does, even picayune stuff, whereas Democratic pundits tend to focus on real issues, and to the extent they comment on this stuff, its to note the hypocrisy of rightwing hacks. Obviously if such a photo of Michelle Obama had existed in 2008, it would’ve dominated the news, starting with the massive fit Fox News would’ve thrown.

That’s a fair point. But Trump’s been a “celebrity” for most all of my life. And through out that time he’s repeatedly demonstrated that he’s a garbage person. He has no redeeming qualities and likely never has.

I just don’t see the point in attacking Melania for a photo shoot she did, as a professional model, while pregnant.

Who is attacking? I don’t see an attack, I see people commenting on the strangeness of the Trumps.

Their petty bullshit is important. It brought us Trump.

If it is so insignificant, how did so many fall for his act and go on to excuse all this petty bullshit and vote the Big Orange Boob into office? And how does a whole party excuse it all and support him?

You seem to be on a bit of magic balance fairy track. I guess there are a lot of true believers…more than you seem to count.

I understand wanting to take a hammer to your car-I mean, who hasn’t wanted to at some point? But why would you need a nail lifter? That seems an unlikely thing for a Model T toolkit.

Do you realize how much wood was used on a Model T?

The entire floorboard, a lot of the slats that formed doors and roof, etc. Maybe it was for pulling a fastener (nail) that was working loose, etc. so you wouldn’t catch your shoes, clothes, etc.

The partial government shutdown is expected to drag on for at least several more days, with House GOP leaders saying Thursday they do not expect a vote this week to reopen the government.

On day six of the shutdown, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) advised members “that no votes are expected in the House this week.”

“As the House awaits Senate action on remaining FY19 appropriations, we will aim to provide 24 hours’ notice ahead of any expected votes in the House,” Scalise’s office added in a notice.

The Senate was scheduled to convene at 4 p.m. on Thursday, but no votes were expected until President Trump and congressional Democrats reach a deal to end the funding lapse that is affecting about 25 percent of the federal government.

Little progress has been made in negotiations as Democratic lawmakers and the White House remain at odds over funding for Trump’s proposed border wall.

“No end in sight to the President’s government shutdown,” Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) tweeted on Thursday. “He’s taken our government hostage over his outrageous demand for a $5 billion border wall that would be both wasteful and ineffective.”

snip

Democratic leaders have said they won’t go beyond $1.3 billion in annual funding for border fencing.

The White House has floated $2.1 billion, which was rejected by Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) last week.

The probability of the House now waiting to act until Jan. 3, when Democrats take control of the lower chamber, appears increasingly likely.

The Republican nomination almost always goes to the guy who is considered “next in line.” Not always, 2000 and 2016 were exceptions. But Reagan won in 80 after losing the nomination in ‘76. Then it was GHWB in ‘88 (lost nomination in ‘80, was VP pick). In ‘96 it was Dole by default (Senate Majority leader, former VP nominee). ‘08 was McCain’s turn (lost nomination in 2000), ‘12 was Romney’s turn (lost nomination in ‘08).

There wasn’t really a next in line in 2016. Ryan, the ‘12 VP nominee who might be considered the closest thing to a “next in line” didn’t run. If anyone in the Democratic field is a “next in line” its Biden. Democrats do often actually do that; Gore in 2000, Mondale in ‘84, Humphrey in ‘68. We’ll see if Biden gets the nomination.

Yeah, the dynamics of a small field with a clear frontrunner and a wide field with no clear frontrunner are completely different. Sanders isn’t going to be considered in frontrunner in 2020, either, so he’s not going to have that media advantage. Nor is he someone that is going to generate wide support - he might generate deep support, but it’s going to be from a narrow part of the electorate.

LOLWUT?

Dow Gains 139 Points as Stocks Make Like Rocky Balboa and Get Up Off the Mat (Barron’s, yes they wrote that headline).

As they note in their article, your retirement fund if it’s based on stocks is entirely slaved to computer program trading. Good luck with that. (As I’ve noted before, the stock market solely exists to extract wealth from the middle class for the rich. If you make money and are middle class, it’s sort of like winning the lottery - but the lottery is not rigged.)

Have fun with the SEC no longer funded either.

3:49 p.m. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is doing its best Rocky Balboa impersonation as it turns a beatdown into victory.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average had been down more than 600 points at around 2:30 p.m. today, and then it decided to get up off the mat. The blue-chip benchmark has risen 139.41 points, or 0.6% to 23,017.86, while the S&P 500 has ticked up 0.4% to 2,477.29, and the Nasdaq Composite is off 0.1% at 6547.52.

Is there a reason for the rally? Heck no, as long as you mean a headline or piece of news of some sort that caused it to rally. Instead, the Dow tumbled to near Monday’s opening price, and then it was as if the machines kicked on. Maybe they did.

It’s end of year profit taking, then followed by people looking for bargains.

While I still think preachers and real estate sales/flippers are the worst elements of our accepted society, financial writers are close.

On any given day, for any movement in a commodity, such as gold, you can find conflicting headlines trying to explain each and every little movement.

In the big picture, Americans have been trained to believe the equities markets are key to their happiness and security, including retirement, so we’ve built in an expectation for exponential growth (that is, z% return per year) into the very fabric of our society.

That is why the DJIA curve looks like it does, except for the serious market corrections.

The important driver is population growth, which has depended upon immigrants. Stop accepting immigrants… and the economy will not grow as much.

Contrary to the xenophobic bigots’ beliefs.

True, but its hard not to see ‘16 as an example of the party falling in line behind Clinton, rather than falling in love with her. True her only real challenger was Sanders, but that was because she decisively won the invisible primary.

Henry wanted to keep the price down. Why not have the Dodge boys build the crate and factor in that cost for the wood and then Henry could use it and save a few cents.

I have never heard that story. It is a good one. I’ll have to see if my brother has heard that one. He is a Henry Ford specialist. I think he owns just about every book about Ford and Henry Ford and even goes into Firestone, Edison and others to even dig into the side characters.

He admits to going to Austria. He denied going to the Czech Republic, showing a copy of his (closed) passport on social media as proof.

The EU does not require a passport check between Austria and the Czech Republic. His claim was immediately called out as bull, but the point of the claim was for conservatives who don’t know any better.

I miss hearing Jemele on ESPN radio. I always like her no BS approach to sports. She offered great takes from the perspective of a woman. And she was unafraid to ask sharp questions to big egos.

ESPN blew it there, but then…ESPN. They have their issues. They got too big for their britches.

ESPN’s problem is that they haven’t be able to decide if they’re going to be a journalistic entity or an entertainment entity. I remember up until the mid-90s, when I was in high school, most of the “sports” that the showed was filler - things like bowling, lumberjack competitions, darts, that sort of thing - between news broadcasts like Sportscenter or analysis shows where they did real analysis. They might have the occasional baseball game or whathaveyou, but mostly they were a source of sports news. Then they started getting into these “partnerships” with various leagues, both pro and collegiate. And the thing about being a “partner” is that you have a fiduciary duty to your partners to not hurt the partnership. So a lot of their news/analysis shows became more opinion/entertainment. But they’d try to straddle the line between journalism and entertainment and it’d almost always blow up in their face.

Yeah, but once Cohen was in the EU proper, then it’s pretty much all Schengen. For example, if he flew from Rome to Prague, then he wouldn’t have to undergo passport control as it’s intra-EU travel.

You can legally have two passports, for two different reasons.

1) Official travel. I had two when I was stationed in Spain.
2) Logistical. Some countries won’t allow people in if they have stamps from certain countries (the best example being Israel and some Arab states).

In either case, you have to provide proof to the Passport Office you need two.

Don’t forget, they overspent on some of those properties like drunken sailors on leave.

Being an auto racing fan, I am particularly laughing at the huge contract they signed with NASCAR that was good for NASCAR and a revenue killer for ESPN.

They couldn’t sell that off fast enough.

I understand they have done that with many of their big properties. That is why they started letting go of a lot of talent about three or so years ago. They couldn’t afford the money they were paying and others like Fox and CBS did.

Dory is well recovered from her ‘lady parts’ operation, but still has 2 more days in the Donut Collar. She’s bounding around with her usual enthusiasm. Here she is, terrorizing a leaf from the apple tree, which I’d picked off and she begged for….

Mrs. FBW and I took the Rango and Dory for a walk around the block, after which Rango and I continued on for another 2 miles. Here he is, waiting for me to take his picture and get back to the walk, for chrissakes!

i dont know how current wiki is:

By 2012, 440 km (273.4 mi) (62%) of the barrier had been completed, 57 km (35.4 mi) (8%) was under construction and 212 km (131.7 mi) (30%) had not yet been started,[45] with little progress made by 2014.[46] In September, 2014, the government voted to not reauthorize the barrier in the Gush Etzion area.[47]

- so maybe less than 300 miles of completed wall out of an estimated total of 400 miles
- patrolled by the military

For a wall to work, it has to be manned and monitored. For the length of our border with Mexico, that would require regiments of troops along the border, in violation of treaties and the Constitution’s III Amendment.

Additionally, it won’t stop boats from going around it on the sea.

Something about this doesn’t sound right:

Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson told reporters on Thursday that his deputies have identified a suspect in the shooting of Cpl. Ronil Singh, 33, but are not yet releasing his identity. The unnamed man is suspected of being in the U.S. illegally, though the department gave no other details about his immigration status.

“This suspect, unlike Ron — who immigrated to this country lawfully and legally to pursue his lifelong career of public safety, public service and being a police officer — this suspect is in our country illegally,” Christianson said at a press conference. “He doesn’t belong here. He’s a criminal.”

That the suspect is allegedly in the US illegally is the only detail they’ve released, other than describing him as “Hispanic.”

If the sheriff’s department suspected him of being in the country without documentation, they would not likely release a whole lot of details until they could confirm it.

On the other hand, the article says he has not been captured and are trying to identify him, so it might also be a wee bit of racist conservatism in that sheriff department’s press release.

So wish we could get our new dog interested in tennis balls. We have a huge basket-full. My son plays on the HS team. We took her to an isolated, unused soccer field today to play fetch and she said “stop trying to make fetch happen.” Found the opening in the fence and was looking to run off into the woods. She finally stopped and responded to a call for a treat, but it was dicey.

Six-week training course starts in just over a week. I think we’ll need two.

He enlisted into the Army at 18 years old and was a heavy machine gunner in the 101st Infantry Regiment.

He was awarded the Bronze Star for “exemplary conduct in ground combat against the armed enemy” during the Rhineland Campaign in early 1945. He earned two Purple Hearts for his war wounds in Luxembourg and Arracourt, in northern France.

“He was shot in the calf and he fell to the ground,” his daughter, Candice Easton, told The Times on Christmas Eve about his fight in Luxembourg. “As he lay there and waited for medics, he saw somebody going around the field — a German picking off the wounded. He lay there and he played dead and hoped for the best, and he got bypassed.’

“When a medic got there to help him, he got shot. It was really something. My dad isn’t very dramatic — I’m being dramatic about it — but by the time my father was taken to a field hospital, he thought it was over with and he could finally relax, the field hospital got bombed and they had to move all the patients.”

snip

With her father already buried in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton only two days after his death, Easton is trying to give him a celebration of life worthy of the man himself.

“My father was a very good man, and just because he died so old there’s nobody left to come,” Easton said, her voice breaking. “We’re from New York, and he has two friends up there, and they’re in their 90s and they won’t be able to come …. I’m the only one left. I’m 63, I’m having a celebration of life for him this Saturday in Flowery Branch at the Masonic Hall, and I’m worried nobody will come.”

Cornelssen’s celebration of life is set for noon on Saturday, Dec. 29, at the Flowery Branch Masonic Lodge on 5416 Spring Street.

Easton invites local veterans to attend and celebrate her late father.

Doctors from the University of Minnesota are raising funds to go and provide care to refugees south of our border. The trip is one of the first of its kind - but part of a long tradition of Minnesota’s volunteerism and global spirit.

Deciding to go to Mexico to do volunteer work wasn’t the most super-tough decision for Minnesotans in December.

That said, more power to them. I hope they can do good work.

I’ve heard that they are very chill. Run/walk them a bit and then they just want to sleep or lie about for the rest of the day. I’ll work on the Missus.

Our dog is great, but we’re still getting to know each other after two months. She loves tug of war. She’s worn out two ropes and we aren’t buying another soon, so she goes into her crate and picks up bedding towels to bring to me to try to start a fight. But mostly she likes to curl up next to me on the sofa. And when I’m in our bedroom she’ll come in to bonk me with her nose but then goes to the landing outside the door to lie down until I come out. Then she goes bounding down the stairs, leaps a couple of yards across the wood floor to the carpet and does what she can to engage me in either a tug of war match or some serious belly scratching. Whenever I can I indulge.

ETA: and right now she’s happily scraping the marrow out of an antler I bought for her today.

Yeah, she runs/walks with face on the ground sniffing the whole way.

OT, but last year I asked my older son to give the musically inclined younger boy the Telecaster I bought for him a few years ago since he didn’t play. Just now I heard younger son playing a song and so I poked my head in his door and asked “was that Jason Isbell’s “Relatively Easy”?

So, last night’s PowerBall winner was another NYC winner (Brooklyn this time.)

Good for them… though as usual the tweeters seem to not understand that the winner will end up with only a small fraction of the advertised amount. First, the present cash value is only about 55% of the annuitized advertised amount.

Then there is federal tax of 37%… and NY state tax… and then NYC has its own special tax.

Still, the winner will be rich.
