I’ve witnessed an impressive amount of drum solos in my life, sometimes by the best drummers in the world, but this one by Larnell Lewis still blew me away.

The City Lights - written by Larnell Lewis

The Band:
William Sperandei - Trumpet
Rob Christian - Tenor Sax/Flute
Elmer Ferrer - Guitar

Audio Mixed by Larnell Lewis

About the solo:
This solo vamp is fun to play over. It’s a bar of 5 & 6 to total 11 beats.

About the song:

‘The City Lights’ was written and inspired by the many late night red-eye flights that I’ve taken to get home from a long tour run. There’s nothing like the feeling of flying over your hometown and seeing all of the beautiful street lights before you land.

Enjoy!

From the last thread:

Time for my state party to put pressure on the ever-concerned Sen. Ben Sasse.

For that matter, out and about I can mention things like “your tax returns” and the fact our national monuments right here are closed. Scott’s Bluff National Monument is a big tourist draw for our area, with two upcoming events (the annual hot air balloon race which draws people from all over the world, and the annual Monument Marathon).

Chimney Rock over in Bayard is also closed (the principle draw for my county).

Thread (twenty-four tweets) on how the media narrative to get clicks/eyeballs actually drives the narrative around candidates, reinforcing things about candidates which are untrue or misleading. That shapes the voters’ opinions far more than stump speeches or voting records.

Thread:

Anymouse ??  Jan 4, 2019 • 7:17:20pm

From 2009:

Here’s a comment that I shunted off onto the back burner a few days ago, hoping to find a larger context to place it in. However, after consideration, I think the statement actually does an excellent job of describing the political context in which our country finds itself:

“The salient fact of American politics is that there are fifty to seventy million voters each of whom will volunteer to live, with his family, in a cardboard box under an overpass, and cook sparrows on an old curtain rod, if someone would only guarantee that the black, gay, Hispanic, liberal, whatever, in the next box over doesn’t even have a curtain rod, or a sparrow to put on it.”

Attributed to commenter Davis X. Machina, in a post at Balloon Juice. This post is one in a growing number contributing to a wonderfully funny, snarky, and often thought-provoking political lexicon.

Goes to Outside the Interzone, with links in the article.

At best, it’s a signal a lá “Cross me and you’re out and replaced with someone who does what I tell ‘em”. Very soon leads to people not daring to stand up when it’s actually needed.

It’s hard to tell these days. A lot of these right wing “voices” secretly love Donald Trump. Sometimes the line between seriousness and mockery is stupidly blurred with these assholes. Jonah Goldberg is a good example of this breed of conservative “thinker” at the higher echelon. He says he hates Trump, but he loves everything he’s done.

In past shutdowns, even the Cruz shutdown of ‘13, things were resolved soon enough that federal employees didn’t go unpaid for longer than a single pay period. Unless Cheeto Benito gives up this temper tantrum in the next week, we’ll have surpassed the longest shutdown of 21 days and be in uncharted waters.

I know if I was told I’d be working for an indefinite period without the promise of payment, I’d have more than a few choice words for my immediate superiors and be contemplating just how I can exploit the system without getting fired.

Oversight is coming. He will do anything to prevent that. So will the rest of the GOP.

Germany’s democracy went out without a whimper from the populace. If they go all the way with this here, I guess we’ll find out if Americans will allow the same.

As the government shutdown drags on, lawyers from the White House, the Department of Homeland Security and the Pentagon are meeting to discuss whether President Donald Trump can declare a national emergency to deploy troops and Defense Department resources to build his border wall, according to two sources with knowledge of the discussions.

One of the sources, a senior administration official, said the White House has kept this option on the table for some time, but is now considering it more seriously.

“Depending on the severity of crisis, it’s always been an option. Now that things are getting worse, we are looking at how that could be operationalized and used to confront the crisis,” the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, in my part of the world …

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday ordered the People’s Liberation Army to be ready for battle as the country faces unprecedented risks and challenges.

Xi’s speech was made at a meeting of top officials from the Central Military Commission (CMC), which he heads, and broadcast later on national television.

“All military units must correctly understand major national security and development trends, and strengthen their sense of unexpected hardship, crisis and battle,” he said.

At the meeting, Xi also signed off on the first military command of 2019, which will kick-start a year of enhanced military training and exercises.

China’s economy is flagging, so Xi is falling back on the autocrat’s crutch — nationalism — to stay in power.

Sound familiar?

First off the “21 days” is bullshit because we went SIX GODDAMNED WEEKS without being paid from Thanksgiving 1995 to after New Years in 1996. Coworkers had NO Thanksgiving and NO Christmas for their kids that year.

You’ll see massive disruptions which is precisely what Putin wants and the Republicans are openly conspiring with him to destroy the Federal Government.

Also remember that the debt ceiling is coming closer every day. If Congress and Trump fail to act we will go into default. Trump would see nothing wrong with defaulting on the debt at paying maybe a penny on every thousand or ten thousand dollars on T-bills, Treasury securities and Savings bonds.

Considering all these things happening together: Personnel leaving the government because they can’t do their jobs, Trump’s declaration he can invoke emergency powers to construct his monument to racism, Mitch McConnell refusing to hold hearings on Obama’s judicial picks for years, things like this:

Goldwater inviting in the Klan and Birchers, Reagan inviting in the Evangelicals, Dominionists subverting the military officer corps with the help of Focus on the Family, &c &c …

“Depending on the severity of crisis, it’s always been an option. Now that things are getting worse, we are looking at how that could be operationalized and used to confront the crisis,” the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

There is no “crisis” at the border. The GOP is basing their continued debasement of US rules and laws on clearly false claims.

Sorry, Sopan Deb. Mark Meadows knew. He lied.

[Embedded content]

No.

Because the motherfucker knows and doesn’t care.

If he cared, he wouldn’t be supporting Trump’s mutherfucking shutdown to force Americans to pay for the goddamned wall that Trump promised his know nothing base that Mexico would pay for.

The only thing Meadows and the rest of the GOP cares about is gutting the safety net so they can get more tax cuts for millionaires like Trump.

Gut the safety net, sabotage functioning govt, then claim it is broken and we shouldn’t be paying for substandard service, so return the money to taxpayers in tax cuts.

Rinse and repeat.

The GOP keeps playing this game, and their base continues to buy the baffling BS, when so many of the GOP base actually rely on these very programs. Throw in a heavy dose of racism that nonwhites are using these programs too, and you get GOP base of poor white guys actively supporting positions that will screw them in the long run, just so they can put nonwhites in their proper place.

It was not a crisis when Trump took office, and it’s not one now.

I’ll repeat this endlessly, but I also know it’s preaching to the choir:

Border crossings are at multidecade lows, a trend started in the 1990s and continued under Obama.
The number here illegally is also at multidecade lows, a trend that also started in the 1990s and continued under Obama.

Trump inherited a stable situation at the border, and Trump created a crisis and manufactured outrage among his bigoted base to keep them frothing. He is signaling to his white nationalist core that he’s one of them and that he wants to keep nonwhites out.

That’s what this is about, and media outlets need to focus ALOT more on this aspect.

The shutdown is secondary to the value signaling Trump and the GOP are pushing here.

Trump and GOP are pursuing this to show that they’re trying to keep nonwhites out.

At same time, Trump has no problem exploiting nonwhites to maximize his profits. See his Bedminster golf course and the ongoing investigations into their hiring practices. See also how he used immigrant laborers to tear down the Bonwit Teller building to build his Trump tower in NYC.

Hmm. The people who were protesting in France have quite a few legitimate things to be pissed off about. One of the reasons why those protests were quite widespread was there are many people in France who:

* Work hard, but don’t earn much money due to the general condition of the French economy.

* Bought a diesel car or van that they need to use to get to work, that they had hoped to use for the next ten years.

The changes to tax on diesel have completely screwed these people over. People who don’t live in cities in France have no choice but to use a car to get around, and France is a big sparsely populated country car journeys are quite long compared to England or the coastal regions of the US.

There’s a significant number of people who are really going to struggle to find an extra 400 Euros a year for diesel costs.

In addition these people are being told that they’ll need to get rid of their cars when they get phased out.

In addition, these tax increases on working people come right after some tax cuts for the wealthy.

It is not surprising a significant number of French people are seriously pissed off.

They don’t stand up to Donny because they know the conditions of their party. It is now the Trump party and it is damaged. They let him take their party because it was good times.

They thought hey this jerk won, he is not what we wanted, but he isn’t very bright and we can control him to get what we want. That worked up until he got away from their control, not that he ever was, but they thought they could rein him in.

Now they don’t have the House, they are looking at a tough go for the Senate in 2020. If they piss off the Trumper base they are dead.

And they have a President that is looking worse day by day. And even in this state he is killing them and they can’t do shit about it.

What do they have to work with that is reasonable? It is all crazy all the time. I don’t think that is sustainable.

I was on my way to a client meeting yesterday when my check engine light came on. We’ve got one of those fancy scanners, so I scanned the engine this morning and it says I’ve got a Cylinder 1 misfire.

I’m hoping it’s just a fouled plug, I don’t feel like paying my mechanic another bunch of money. I just had my power steering hoses replaced, and that pinched a little, especially right at the height of the holiday.

I think that is why you are seeing some of the older guys leaving the GOP. It’s gotten away from them and they don’t want to be around it. They did it to themselves.

They do not stand up to Orange Anusface because Putin has Kompromat on them and he’s yanking their collars.

Take a look at the ignition coil for the corresponding plug, if there’s any oil around it’s likely the valve cover gasket leaking oil and shitting up the coil.

As for extra power, other than batteries for a flashlight I’m not sure where to get that. The water system has back-up generators to keep the public water system going in the event of an extended power outage.

Mona Eltahawy: I swear to make the patriarchy uncomfortable. And I’m proud of it. (NBC, opinion piece)

The more a woman is caught in the intersections of oppressions, the more her language is policed.

Editor’s note: This piece has been edited in accordance with NBC News editorial policy. The editors appreciate the irony.

Filthy. Disgraceful. Indecent. Vulgar. That is what the powerful and their enablers will call you if you dare poke them in the eye by actually doing what you were invited to do — roast the rich and powerful at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner — rather than what women are expected to do from birth: play nice.

(cut)

Once while standing in line at Denver airport security, a white man — another passenger waiting to go through — demanded I “prove” I was a U.S. citizen. “F**k you!” was my immediate response. Another white man immediately and predictably chimed in: “Language! Language!” But what is really more offensive here, the first man’s xenophobic prejudice or my language? (more)

I agree with you. I had been looking at something like that for about a year. Including assembling my own from an inverter, battery, etc.

The goal was to keep power for my cpap during a short-term outage. I did not want a generator due to noise and the need to set it up outside due to exhaust.

After a lot of thought I picked up the next model up from Costco when they dropped a small bit in price. Goal Zero has a very good reputation. And the system has a good interface.

The downside is that the price is much higher than assembling your own. And it is not expandable.

Not the same, but…

My second annual 5k is next month. I haven’t ‘run’ in two weeks. Way back two weeks ago, when I used to run, I did it twice a week, or not at all. I thought when I ‘retired’, I would get up to three times a week. But retirement has been greeted by cold weather. I have clothing enough to do the Iditabike, but I can’t make myself go out in the cold. Maybe spring will come in a week and I can ‘run’ three times a week, and take a couple days off before the event. Would that be overdoing it?

Glenn Greenwald: Renaissance Dickhead.

Heh, I have an old Photoshop for your comment.

I find many times I can use old ‘shops because the same people do the same shit all the time.

I suspect some day I’ll be able to bring out some Chuck C. “The Furby” Johnson shops. He’ll be back somehow.

re: #353 Teddy’s Person

This just reads like Glenn trying to get someone to do his homework for him.

I go with he is playing ignorant to make a point. Might be a way to downplay and make it seem it lacks importance.

There are always smarmy reasons with Greenwald.

Just his long-winded way of claiming it’s a witch hunt.

I discovered Glenn during the Bush administration when he wrote for Salon. I would read the first couple paragraphs and think I understood his argument. I would keep reading and by the end have no fucking clue. For a couple of months, I thought it was me. I thought, well I’m not a lawyer, so I just don’t understand his rhetorical and argumentative style. It slowly dawned on me that, in fact, it was not me but Glenn’s obtuse argumentation and horrid prose that was the problem. I promptly stop reading him.

/good luck with your toes. I know everything else is ready. You’re probably already packed. Give klys a hug for me. Have a great time!

Nice! Mr. w does cast iron restorations, but he has somebody else make the wooden handles. Not so much ‘carved’, more lathed, planed, drilled, and sanded king of stuff.

The sentimental value always rules value. You have a double-generational (now triple) familial connection. And you still use it?!? It should go on a high kitchen shelf.

Just happy to see some sunshine around here in Western NC. Coming off one of the wettest years ever. Asheville had more than 80 inches of rain, nearby Marion had over 100. Here in the Foothills we topped 70 inches. Average is around 45 or 50.
