Two things I only noticed about this track after repeated listenings -

On the horn break before the sax solos, Genevieve scats the entire section. Insane.

And Jeff Coffin’s solo is fucking epic. Just when you think he can’t take it a step further, he takes it two steps further.

My regional newspaper didn’t run my letter in opposition to my state senator Steve Erdman (R-District 47) scare-mongering over Colorado’s legal maryjane laws.

They did run one from a fellow in Bellevue (a suburb of Omaha four hundred fifty miles away from Scottsbluff and out of their circulation area though).

His letter was pretty good.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Erdman wrong on marijuana-related facts (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, Jan. 3, 2019)

He ended his letter with this:

Please read for yourself “Impacts of Marijuana Legalization in Colorado” Oct 18. I don’t live in Scottsbluff, but your State Senator is out of touch and trying to scare you.

Strict Republican supporters wouldn’t vote for her anyway, and every time they try to attack her and fail when she takes them apart, they raise her profile with Democrats, independents, and non-voters.

They’ll do that with any Democrat. I think she can handle it.

Moreover, it’s good to see Democrats in general decide to stop taking Republican crap. While I agree with Michelle Obama’s “when they go low, we go high,” the fact is they are not honest brokers. All their cries of MUH CIVILITY are attempts to shut out conversation or debate. Civility is earned, not demanded.

You want to see the shutdown end tomorrow. All the DNC would have to do is announce that they’d agree to remove the restriction on the $1.6B they already agreed to go to border security that says it can’t be used for wall construction. Mitch and Donny would break bones tripping over each other to get it signed before day’s end.

That’s rather the point, the GOP are working like mad to ignore that money in order to maintain the fiction that “border security” is going unfunded by the DNC. But remove that restriction and suddenly they’d rush to claim that money before the press know what was happening.

It’s funny to use the phrase “well thought-out” in connection with tRump, but I think his ploy of changing the word “shutdown” to “strike” is a well thought-out ploy. He thinks once he establishes that language in the public mind—you know the MSM will be happy to just parrot it—that he can fire all these furloughed workers like Reagan did the air traffic controllers. See? No more shutdown, ‘cause there’s no more government!

He’s trying like mad to spin the ongoing repair/upgrade project that has existed since the Dubya years as “wall construction,” so odds are when he inevitably ends up folding, he’s going to insist that the “work” will continue and that he’ll just get the money “some other way.” And then go to the voters in 2020 saying the work has already started, now he needs another 4 years to see its completion.

Naomi Wu, the Shenzhen-based Maker and YouTuber, has written a long article relating her not-very-happy experience with Vice Media, which in the end cost her her Patreon account and her livelihood as a content creator.

medium.com

Before the big blow-up with Vice, Naomi was fairly outspoken on her YT about a lot of issues, because she was supported by her Patreon donors. Once the Patreon income stream dried up, she went off-line for a while, then came back with partial corporate sponsorship to continue making her DIY videos. Now that she’s got such sponsorship from a Chinese company, she’s had to temper her YT comments to avoid trouble with the Chinese censors and authorities. She refers to this in the Medium article, and I can confirm there is a big difference in her content before and after the Vice fiasco.

Please don’t get me wrong. I don’t think he should have allowed the puppy to drown. He could have snapped it’s neck and killed it very quickly and painlessly. Other than that, I just don’t see that much wrong with it, other than it was a puppy which pulls at all of our heartstrings. If it had been a mouse, I don’t think people would care at all.

A Beinart article in this month’s Atlantic ties all the world’s authoritarian leaders into a theory of it being driven by misogyny:

theatlantic.com

The problem with both American-born story lines is that authoritarian nationalism is rising in a diverse set of countries. Some are mired in recession; others are booming. Some are consumed by fears of immigration; others are not. But besides their hostility to liberal democracy, the right-wing autocrats taking power across the world share one big thing, which often goes unrecognized in the U.S.: They all want to subordinate women.

(snip)

In each case, Trump and his ideological cousins tied their predecessor’s illegitimacy to women’s power. And in each case, their efforts to denigrate and subordinate women cemented—for their supporters—the belief that the nation, having been turned upside down, was being turned right-side up.

Not sure if I entirely buy this theory, but it’s… interesting.

One thing that has amazed me about this shutdown is to see Senate Dem unity at a time when it seemed like such a thing was practically a myth. None of the usual suspects are on TV arguing that giving Donny the money would be “better” than continuing the shutdown, none are floating “deals” that they’d be personally okay with in order to win their vote for cloture, and none are badmouthing the leadership by suggesting that they’re wrong for refusing to “compromise.” I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that Chuck Schumer has finally found his balls and realized that standing up to Donny is of greater importance than “going along to get along.”

Also, what exactly would be the point? With the Dems firmly in control of the House and popular opinion overwhelmingly blaming Trump for the shutdown for any Senate Dems to vacillate now would just serve to turn them into pariahs. In other words I think it has less to do with Schumer per se than the current state of play. Especially considering that Collins and Corker have already blinked and said they’d support the House bill to re-open the government and Romney is overtly trying to probe Trump’s weakness ahead of 2020.

True, the combined unpopularity of Trump and the success in the midterms has totally unbalanced the old political calculus, such that those who might once have tried to be “dealmakers” who “reached across the aisle” are either remaining quiet or actively supporting the leadership in its refusal to budge an inch.

If they Democrats can hold out for another few weeks, they can basically force Trump into a humiliating climbdown that will serve to fatally weaken him in the eyes of his supporters - indeed, Senator Graham said as much a couple of days ago.

It shows some promise, but the script needs polishing and the editing needs work. It took me a bit to figure out how the ship rescue, the Paladin, and the synthetic person on the asteroid (who is somehow suddenly on Mars with Robert Picardo’s character) were all connected. Also, I’m not sure if Muslims are going to take to Picardo as a Muslim. That seems a little inauthentic to me, but what do I know?

Also, I hate nitpicking the physics, but the launch of Paladin would subject the crew to at least 3Gs, especially on the curved part of the ramp and where the hell are their headrests? How is that ship able to cruise in Mars’ thin atmosphere like an airplane with those stubby wings? And how did they get to Mars so damned fast?

Sorry, I feel like I was watching a remake of Space: 1999. If it goes into production, I hope the producers can raise the verisimilitude to the level of The Expanse.

Does anyone know if there is a way to assess the total “tax rate” for each state, and what I mean by total is not only income or sales taxes, but property taxes and the fees people pay?

Interesting question. I found this:
2018’s Tax Burden by State
They slice and dice the data a few ways.

Michigan is 26th in overall state tax burden. 8.53%
New York has the highest state tax burden at 13.04%.
Alaska has the lowest. 4.94%

From what I just read, it was not in front of the class, but rather three students, and two of them at least lived on farms and understand the cycle of life. Was this a bad idea? Yes. Is it a firing offense? I don’t think so.

I completely disagree. This teachs lack of empathy, that end of life is meaningless and you might as well just kill something (grandma?) and be done with it because she’s inconvenient… So feed her to the wolves. If your own dog gets sick just shall it’s neck and move on.

It’s sociopathic in a societal way.

You want to see the shutdown end tomorrow. All the DNC would have to do is announce that they’d agree to remove the restriction on the $1.6B they already agreed to go to border security that says it can’t be used for wall construction. Mitch and Donny would break bones tripping over each other to get it signed before day’s end.

yeah, and then spend the next two years having Trump talk about he won, how the treasonous Democrats finally saw that they needed to support border security, blah blah blah. Not only is Donny drowning, but Dems can’t try to save him because he’s thrashing around so much that the attempt would be too dangerous for them.

re: #75 Targetpractice

One thing that has amazed me about this shutdown is to see Senate Dem unity at a time when it seemed like such a thing was practically a myth. None of the usual suspects are on TV arguing that giving Donny the money would be “better” than continuing the shutdown, none are floating “deals” that they’d be personally okay with in order to win their vote for cloture, and none are badmouthing the leadership by suggesting that they’re wrong for refusing to “compromise.” I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that Chuck Schumer has finally found his balls and realized that standing up to Donny is of greater importance than “going along to get along.”

also with the fact that levin and lieberman have rightly been put out to pasture, and that red-state Dems who routinely tried to position themselves with their voters got throttled last election. Maybe, just maybe, a western-state Dem should have considered that his/her voters would appreciate an independent perspective that might not always jibe with their own.

They also mischaracterise FFRF. It is not an atheist group. The group has supporters from many Christian sects who don’t want to see one Christian sect steamroll all others.

This is true. The FFRF got involved in (and is currently leading) the legal assault on the clergy housing tax exemption because a devout member of a church of Christ asked them to. (It also helped that he is a retired IRS appellate agent and knew what he was talking about.) The case is on its second go-round and is awaiting a decision in the Seventh Circuit in the case styled Gaylor v. Mnuchin.

This is classic narcissistic abuse as well as classic domestic abuse. Not surprising coming from the mushroomed maniac. He’s willing to hurt hundreds of thousands of people to get his way, and doesn’t care about those he’s hurting. All that’s important is that he gets his way.

I don’t understand why the media hasn’t pointed this out.

“Church” is not “qualification for office” no matter how many Christians want to make it so.

I honestly couldn’t care less if politicians are Christians or not. Jesus didn’t tell us to build an earthly kingdom, in fact, He explicitly says the opposite multiple times. Why American Christians seem so fixated on disobeying this simple direct order is beyond me.

Especially galling because apparently the whole thing was a Roger Stone-technique to get Trump to focus on immigration in campaign speeches. “Build a wall” was easy for him to remember.

Well, from outside I can name a whole lot of reasons (and not just wingnut evangelicals), but I’ll refrain from doing so.

I don’t know what Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s religious sect is, but as a woman of Puerto Rican descent, Roman Catholicism might be a good bet.

This reminded me of the insane “ambassador” of the Republic of Texas, Richard McLaren, who took two of his neighbors hostage back in 1997 resulting in a week long standoff with police. He’s now serving a 99 year sentence in Texas. I found out that a small budget indie film parodying the events was available on Amazon Prime to stream, The Republic of Rick, which I found amusing, because working at the Kentucky AG’s office I occasionally had to deal with crazy sovereign citizen types so I kept tabs on what some of them were up to.

Heh. I missed her. But I did have NBC on for the local politics show before Meat the Chuck. I saw he was interviewing Mick Mulvaney first off so I watched that segment.

I heard Mulvaney claim there have been 60,000 to 80,000 attempts at illegal border crossing in the last few months, or something like that. I was working and not paying close attention so I may have caught that wrong, but I note the numbers seemed more than a little high.

Many LDS members are Democrats, including Harry Reid.

Yes, this is true. But far too many LDS members seem to believe that GOP stands for God’s Own Party. In our congressional district, “who is the most Mormon” gets the votes of these people, rather than “who would best represent CD-5”. (I live in Arizona.) So we have Andy Biggs, who graduated from BYU Law but is dumber than a stump and has his nose so far up Trump’s tuchis that he can see Trump’s tonsils. And yes, I’ve told him this.

Left-leaning comedian Ellen DeGeneres must be part of a “deep state” conspiracy, President Donald Trump’s son Eric said on Twitter Tuesday night, after apparently misunderstanding how social media works.

The heir to the Trump real estate fortune made the assertion by tweeting a screenshot of which accounts the company’s algorithm suggested he follow, including the Twitter streams of Hillary Clinton, former President Barack Obama and Ellen DeGeneres.

re: #180 makeitstop

Wilson put up more #youseemnice correspondence this morning - along with this thread.

From that thread, the third tweet.

Wrong, Mr. Wilson. Conservatives opposed the Revolution and fought on behalf of the Crown. They led the Whiskey Rebellion. They revolted against the country in the Civil War for the right to maintain people as property and used the Bible to justify it. After the war they imposed Jim Crow, some of which still exists today, to maintain white supremacy.

They supported trickle-down economics in the XIX Century. They just keep renaming it. They’ve presided over the deepest recessions and depressions in the nation (but note the wealthy are never hurt in those except in isolated incidents).

They opposed the suffragette movement using the Bible to justify it. They imposed Prohibition using the Bible to justify it. They opposed New Deal programmes when they were introduced and still do so today. They still promote stripping rights and minorities right up to today.

And that’s my problem with so-called Never Trump conservatives. They view him as some sort of aberration of conservative ideology. He is the result of conservative ideology. They are only upset he pulled the cover off what conservatism is.

[Polish descendant of family who fled the Nazis weighing in]

I think the terms “Nazi death camp” or “Nazi concentration camp” are sufficient to describe such a place. If it is necessary to note the location of the camp, then “Nazi-occupied (nation)” is sufficient.

Did some Poles help the Nazis? Sure. Did Poland? That nation was extinguished in 1939. It no longer existed. Its government was in exile in England.

The same goes for other countries. We don’t refer to such camps in other nations by that nation’s name. Poland seems to get singled out (from my not-well educated viewpoint) because the scale of mass-murder and genocide there.

So how long before Bolton gets his marching papers? CNN’s Brian Stelter had an interesting interview with a military analyst (don’t remember the name) who just quit his position at NBC because he felt the MSM was spending all its time on the Trump sideshow instead of investigating our continuing military ventures and whether they are wise. As others have said, Trump’s objections may be correct but his style and proposed solutions only make bad situations worse.

This expert alleged that we are conducting strikes in 9 nations — but few know which they are. Brian certainly didn’t and I don’t. Any lizards here have any suggestions (other than Syria and Afghanistan)?

Trump is quickly working on implementing Putin’s policy of bringing America to its knees and destroying our economy. Big bonus here is that it actually will improve Russia’s GDP.

If it’s anything like Russia-China gas deals, Russia will be selling the product at below market rates to the Chinese since Putin desperately wants his Asian Pivot. China knows this, is totally transactional and doesn’t care about developing any relationship with Russia. So they’ll take the cheap crops as long as they’re cheap, and buy from someone else the minute they’re not. If any country (besides Russia) ends up crippling Russia, it will not be from the West, it will be China.

But is it below cost to Russia? Russia loses only if the cost is higher than the income.

The suspect is Eric Black jr, age 20. Police believe that someone else was the intended target and the family was attacked in a case of mistaken identity. There may be more arrests.

This is exactly why I wish black activists would have given this more time to shake out before they started pushing the racial crime theory. Too early.
