MP4 Video

We also have a new first-hand account that strongly refutes the statement (issued by GOP-linked PR firm RunSwitch) from the teen who smugly stared at elder Nathan Phillips, that he was trying to “diffuse the situation.”

So the BernieBots are all over how Harris is not a True Progressive?.

As much as Harris will be challenged, being a DA and AG, the idea that Bernie is the true measure of “progressive” is laughable.

From the previous thread:

re: #327 JC1

Her career in public service didn’t start in the Senate. My concern is about what she did when she had actual executive/prosecutorial power.

I’ve never been a fan of Bernie.

Warren’s economic knowledge and consumer advocacy seem genuine. Given Harris’s history, her liberal turn in the Senate seems opportunistic.

From this diary: dailykos.com:

First and foremost, let’s point out that of all the attorneys general and elected representatives in the country during the financial crisis, there was ONE who chose to investigate and who went after the banks for a settlement. That was Kamala Harris. She didn’t get any prosecutions or convictions, but she did strong-arm the banks into turning a $2 billion settlement proposal into $25 billion of immediate payments.

This can’t be overlooked. Sen. Harris was entirely responsible for pulling out of negotiations in 2011 in order to force the banks to pay more. And it worked. So before you get all high and mighty about how you would have for sure jailed some bankers, weigh what good it did California families to get $25 billion compared to what they would have gotten from watching a complex civil proceeding play out over five years.

I won’t take any lectures on what being a true progressive is from supporters of a man who once had his immigration record praised by Steve King.

Bernie is doing what he does best: Trying to split the DNC vote to his benefit, with an eye towards getting and then rejecting their nomination so he can run again as an “independent.”

Has Bernie gotten better on that subject? Probably so but the idea that Bernie has always been there for us and others like Harris have not is complete garbage and I must take issue with deriding her as a “cop.” Prosecutors aren’t cops. They are elected by the people. And if you are truly serious about anti corruption efforts, you’re going to need prosecutors.

It’s not. After his ‘16 performance, he’s lost that luster of being the “unknown outsider” and is now looking more and more like the turd in the punch bowl. If he holds true to form, he’ll try to bullshit people in the first few debates that he wishes to “run on ideas,” while he allows his campaign and his bot followers to do that heavy lifting of attacking his opponents.

We are dealing with the American equivalent of the British “public schoolboys”: a quaint term for attendees of private schools (named so because they were open to the (non-nobility) public, for a fee, of course) and these lads were raised on privilege and attitude and now they are feeling victimized because they cannot get away with being assholes in public.

Because his focus evolved to started talking about other stuff that made people uncomfortable like poverty and war. Sorry that implied that he didn’t talk about those before. He certainly did but he definitely ramped up his focus on poverty and war as the war on poverty went on and the war in Vietnam escalated.

Not to mention that shit was starting to get heated shortly before his assassination, with a lot of white moderates pegging him (wrongly) as the man who started all the animosity. It was how he gained a reputation among even “well-meaning” white folks as a “troublemaker” who hurt the movement more than he helped.

Bernie was able to exploit a time of weakness in the party back in 2016 and the flawed narrative that “Hillary was a flawed candidate.” Plus he refused to leave when it was blatantly obvious that he lost (remind you of anyone currently??) and made it all (surprise!) about himself.

Thing is, the Democratic party is nowhere near that level of weakness. And any nominee that emerges is not going to have the burden of 25 years of GOP demagoguery and demonization that Hillary was saddled with.

Exactly. You know, it’s a shame we do learn about the Birmingham letter but we don’t really learn about why he had to rightfully so admonish the white moderates he spoke of. One reason why I respect RFK and would have been all aboard his campaign in 1968 is RFK was willing to go to African American communities and listen to them and their concerns. Nixon and Wallace sure as hell didn’t do that but neither did Humphrey (who I do admire) and McCarthy.

It’s always amazed me that many young white people seem to fall for old white guys like Bernie and Ron Paul that claim to be offering something new and “different from politics as usual” but Bernie and Ron Paul are really IMO two relics. Yeah that’s very fair enough but I just think the idea that no one liked her is crap. Read this from a fellow lizard: People like HRC. People look up to her. The paradox with HRC to me anyhow is people like her when she’s actually in office and I think if elected she wold be a popular president today but she is more divisive when she seeks office. I imagine it’s the same thing with the other women who are running this year.

I went from being Bernie curious perhaps more so than many Lizards in mid to late 2015 to being a Clinton supporter. And here’s why. HRC to me was a much better candidate in what I had seen in 2008. She had real depth to the way she talked about the issues. I didn’t see that way with Bernie. But what really did it was seeing how two faced Bernie was. “He went from no one cares about the damn emails and promising to run an issues based campaign to mudslinging and I didn’t like the way that anyone who spuported HRC had their progressive bonafides questioned. I didn’t like Dolores Huerta who has spent a lifetime fighting the good fight having her progressive bonafides questioned by a movement who had many people in it young enough to be her grandchildren.I was under 30 at the time and I welcome anyone who wants to participate regardless of age but respect the older men and women who have been there before. A Covington Catholic chaperone weighs in…

Cincinnati .com - Covington Catholic chaperone: ‘There was nothing the chaperones could have done differently’

Many have asked: Where were the chaperones during the confrontation between Covington Catholic High School students, Native American marchers and Black Hebrew Israelites in Washington, D.C. on Friday?

It turns out there were at least five on the scene, one of the chaperones told The Enquirer on Monday.

That chaperone, Val Andreev, stands by how they handled the situation.

“There was nothing the chaperones could have done differently,” said Andreev, a Hebron-resident. “I’m very proud the way the boys handled the situation.”

Andreev and his 14-year-old son joined about 20 other chaperones and 240 students from Covington Catholic last week for the March for Life rally.

They made it back home Saturday without realizing they were involved in a national controversy, Andreev said.

The video of Covington Catholic High School students surrounding Native Americans in front of the Lincoln Memorial and chanting sparked a firestorm across the country.

They saw Covington Catholic junior Nick Sandmann, wearing a red Make America Great Again hat, standing inches from Omaha elder Nathan Phillips, who is chanting and playing a drum. Other Covington Catholic students surround them laughing and cheering.

Andreev said he didn’t see the start of the confrontation between Sandmann and the Omaha elder Nathan Phillips. He said he walked up to the scene in the middle of it.

The students were waiting for the buses to take them home when a group of about 150 of them started arguing back and forth with a group of Black Israelites. Videos show the Black Israelites yelling derogatory statements at people.

No one with the Covington Catholic group at the time saw it as a confrontation, Andreev said. They didn’t think anything of it until the next day when social media erupted with outrage.

“If you look at any videos, there was no confrontation,” Andreev told The Enquirer. “There was nothing to control. There was not any aggression.”

He said another chaperone made the Covington Catholic boys move further back from the Native American protestors. He didn’t hear any of the Covington Catholic students chant “Build that Wall.” He said chaperones gave permission for the students to chant “school spirit” slogans in response to some members of the Black Israelites yelling obscenities at them.

He backed Sandmann’s statement that Phillips and the Native Americans approached them. He believes the students were targeted by the Native American protestors because some were wearing red “Make America Great Again” hats.

“Our boys were set up for this event,” Andreev said. “It was staged.”

Bernie would have allowed Trump to run as a moderate. Think about that. And while I don’t think it’s an as big deal as it should be, the honeymoon in the USSR in the height of the USSR would have been something RNC opps research would have pounced on as well as the writings he made in the 70’s. But you know aside from that, I’m not confident he would have made a good choice for VP. I definitely wasn’t impressed with his delegation skills. His surrogates were awful.

What we’re supposed to believe that the states that produce blue dogs have a suddenly liberal almost socialistic base. He benefited from it. And all’s fair in the end but his movement was very hollow and you’re getting this from the demographic that his movement targeted the most.

there was a ton of ratfucking going on and a lot of idealistic Berniebros were unable or unwilling to see or acknowledge it

I think the Berners wanted to believe that those supporting HRC just supported her becaus she was more moderate and electable. I do think HRC is ideologically more moderate than Bernie and more electable than he was but I also more importantly and this is why I ultimately supported her over him is because she would have been a much better President. Hillary and her team you know had plans on who they wanted for SCOTUS, for DOS, etc. Bernie’s shown me that he surrounds himself not with the best minds but people who like him. Clinton I might remind some people who don’t know but her running mate was one of the first people from outside of Illinois to endorse Obama 11 years ago. But I always heard people insist HRC is spiteful and holds a grudge. I don’t think HRC and Kaine are tight like Obama and Biden are but they worked well together IMO.

Ha! Seriously. I mean Sorkin is a great storyteller and that’s just the thing. He’s good at that. But a screenwriter is different than an actual elected official who as I mentioned has an academic background in economics and international relations. It’s not that Sorkin’s opinions and observations are invalid. It’s that maybe he shouldn’t be in the business of talking down to someone who does know a thing or two. I don’t know why he had the need to say anything in the first place. Real life is different than a West Wing episode.

When are they going to interview the millions of us who voted for Democrats in 2016 and in the midterm? Their fascination with racists is duly noted.

The turnout for Democrats last year was staggering. House Democrats got over 60 million votes, 16 million more votes than any party has ever gotten in the midterms before, and 96% of Trump’s popular vote total, the highest ever. The anti-Trump voter is, I guess harder to profile, since we come from all walks of life instead of just being white evangelicals and rural whites who didn’t go to college.

If you look at the tone of these Trump supporter puff pieces, they’ve changed as the media’s narrative about him has changed.

In the beginning, they were largely “Trump can’t be this bad guy, look at the nice folks who support him!”

Then, when the legal troubles began, it was “Well sure, he has some issues, but these folks are sticking by him!”

The the shit-pile deepened and we heard “Who cares if he’s not perfect, these folks in Shitberg, PA continue to support him because he shows he cares about them!”

Now that he’s effectively been neutered through the midterms and Mueller’s investigation, we’re hearing “These folks are starting to question voting for him, but they still think it was the right choice!”

The media seems to be working out their guilt over the way they handled 2016 through these interviews. If the current trajectory continues, we’ll see “Yeah, we should have known better, but it seemed like a good idea at the time!” articles by year’s end.

The more I think about this, the more the blurred lines scare me.

It seems we’re fast reaching a point where politics is little more than another branch of the entertainment business and anybody in that business can interchangeably enter politics and vice-versa.

Seriously, if we can have Anthony Scaramucci on Big Brother and Sean Spicer on Dancing with the Stars, it doesn’t seem that far a stretch to hire Aaron Sorkin to work in the White House, does it?

This is the dangerous reality we’ve created for ourselves and already it’s having serious, orange tinged consequences.

I did see photos from their school a few yeras ago of kids wearing black face to their sporting games.

The culture of racism and bigotry runs deep and proud at Covington.

How do we know? There are receipts:

Those students weren’t fine upstanding kids. They were pushing their white privilege and racist claptrap. And it was encouraged (or at least not discouraged) by anyone in a position of power at the school - either in the earlier situation where they were wearing blackface to basketball games, or at the march in DC this past weekend.

The WAPO article also serves to show that the media is already preparing for the next step in typical American politics: Mass Amnesia. Everybody suddenly forgets why they thought Trump was such a good idea for a candidate, his election treated as a “fluke” or even spun as the “failure” of the DNC to protect America by putting up a “better” candidate, and then the traditional mantra of “We won’t get fooled again!”

The school’s colors are blue and white. They went black and students went blackface, which you would think would be a violation of the student code of conduct, but this is a white privileged catholic school, so no repercussions at all. They get to display their bigotry for all to witness and bask in the racism.

It was clear all along that North Korea was going to play Trump like a fiddle. Trump gave up the leverage to meet. Trump gave up the precondition that North Korea first dismantle their nuclear program before any direct talks. By giving that up, North Korea could make vague noises and Trump would believe whatever he was told.

Trump thinks that the lack of missile launches is a good thing.

It’s no such thing.

North Korea doesn’t need to conduct tests at this point of either a nuclear weapon or missile - because they’ve validated their designs on both and can now just build out an arsenal without interference.

And Trump’s about to have another meeting with North Korea all while Trump’s looking to sabotage the JCPOA with Iran that has kept Iran from following the North Korean example (and they’re probably wishing they took that route since they’d have the nukes to extort Saudis/Gulf States/Egypt (aka the Sunni big powers in the ME) plus Pakistan and Indonesia for good measure (Iran’s the Shi’a minority, and their nuclear ambitions were always with the Sunni/Shi’a schism in mind; Israel was a secondary concern).

That sign was chosen to be ambiguous. You will never convince people who don’t wnat to see it as anything other than the OK sign.

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Like many people, Platteville Police Officer Matt Froiseth was checking out the super blood wolf moon near Highway 151 in Wisconsin on Sunday night.

Instead of howling, the officer heard a kitten meowing.

Upon further examination, Froiseth found the kitten in a ditch. It was covered in about 3 feet of snow.

If they have the votes - 292 in the House, 67 in the Senate - they can override his veto. Given the nature of the standoff, overriding his veto on this would likely cripple his presidency and/or release the MAGAs on the cowardly cuck republicans who betrayed dear leader. McConnell is apparently still more scared of the second outcome than the first.

No. First off, Trump vetoing such bills will make him look even worse.

Second, vetoes can be overridden. Now that would be the break in the GOP that Mitch fears… which is why he’s not letting his Republicans vote.

Whether there are enough votes to override a veto is almost irrelevant, because the GOP is fucked either way. If they override they enrage the MAGA base and if they don’t the rest of the country rightly blames them for cosigning Trump’s shutdown.

Democracy: a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

Republic: a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.

Thus, all republics are democracies, but not all democracies are republics.

Also thus, any idiot who tells you we’re a republic not a democracy is full of shit.

Do you have any idea when that started, and why?

If you mean actual “whiteout” games, I think it was Penn State as all their students would wear all white, one of the colors of Penn State and the color of their football helmets.

It may have been against Ohio State that it started.

Ohio State has had blackout games when their team will wear black uniforms with scarlet and grey accents. Those have been against Penn State.

Students of all races get into the dress for the game.

Like I said, this is in football. It may have caught on in other sports and down to high school games.

Worth keeping in mind: apparently (I don’t have first hand knowledge of this, but have heard it second hand from family members who worked there) in Saudi Arabia, the liability laws are that if you’re not a Saudi national and are involved in an auto accident, you’re at fault, regardless of what the actual circumstances were because “if you weren’t in the country to begin with, this wouldn’t have happened.”

Trump does the same thing with undocumented migrants. It’s a bastardization of Palsgraf. Also a reminder of the idea that a lot of people would prefer that we acted more like totalitarian dictatorships than a representative governments

I can see some “boosters” doing it, but a Catholic School.

DAMN…things must have really changed since I went to school. Politics was never mentioned in any sanctioned way that I can ever remember.

No I’ve seen Catholic schools send their kids to anti abortion rallies and giving them credit. Sorry. I should have clarified.

Yeah, there seems to be a politically conservative (read: reactionary) Catholicism that has gotten very vocal in the last three decades or so. The Bill Donohue sorts.

“I remember being in Wisconsin and your own people were booing you,” Trump said to Ryan according to Sims. “You were out there dying like a dog, Paul. Like a dog! And what’d I do? I saved your a**.”

What is it with Trump and the phrase “dying like a dog.” Canine murder in his past, perhaps? Or is this a common phrase?

It’s a Trump thing. He reportedly doesn’t like dogs, and therefore uses “dog” as an insult

They brought their white privilege and insularity with them. They assumed that other people would just step aside because “White” “Male” “Upper Crust”. Nobody would engage with them in less than deferential manner. Nobody would occupy the same spot as they would and not move away. So there was no preparation and no discipline.

Basic rules of going to protests:
1) Do not engage with counter-protestors.
2) Non-violence.
3) Keep groups far apart.

For those who are wondering why the conservative industrial complex is already reacting so fast, things were already going South with the “Baby Hitler” from the day before. The idea never made sense. Hitler was what he was because other people listened to him as an adult and accepted the ideas he had. In another society, he might have been a nobody or a crank. Or if he had been aborted, someone else might have run with the ball and done better (worse, from the point of the world). But the idea that Shapiro tried to convey was that the pro-life movement wouldn’t have even aborted Baby Hitler as a sign of their compassion.

In any event, the statement overshadowed the “March For Life” event and covered it with a layer or ridicule. The Covington Catholic incident made things even worse.

Ryan’s policy wonk bit wore thin… with Trump.

Everything about that rings true. Ryan is a blowhard who is convinced that he knows what he’s talking about. Trump only listens to what he wants to hear and tunes everyone else out. Trump has the attention span of a gnat. Ryan doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Trump just didn’t care enough to pay attention.

Trump isn’t competent to hold the office (but we all knew this before the election too). Everything Trump is doing is a consequence of having GOPers covering for him and running interference - especially McConnell. Without that support, Trump would be toast.

I mean I’ll be the first to admit as someone who likes JFK that JFK wasn’t a great example for Catholicism’s teachings since he did cheat on Jackie but he definitely understood Catholic theological philosophy. Trump? He doesn’t know anything about anything that doesn’t involve him. I doubt he can even discuss sports in a semi intelligent way.

As BlueGirl wrote above: The “ok” sign by the players is legit in that context. For HS teams in the state of KY, it probably goes back to the 2010-11 University of Kentucky basketball season. Had a couple of very good 3 point shooters, whom every time they made a “3”, would do the three point signal. Many of those times, the circle made between the thumb and index finger, would be placed around the eye, as in a “3 point-dead eye” symbol

Also, the Blackout/Whiteout/Blueout/Grayout student sections are legit. Yes the school colors are Blue and White, but the sports teams there, as do many in HS, have alternate uni’s- All black is a popular alternate uniform choice.

This of course does not give any reason for a student to have blackface on under any circumstance. This is a problem the school must confront and properly address; and not through some Conservative PR firm.

Probably another way to make money. Not really a bad thing. Traditionally, darker uniforms are for home and lighter ones away but I’m not sure if that qualifies in basketball or just baseball and football.

Hey Blue and Smith though, maybe before you guys got involved with high school basketball but do you remember a kid named Scottie Reynolds? I was a year ahead of him in high school. He never made it to the NBA but he has a certain amount of lore at Villanova for shooting a basket that got them past Pitt and into the FInal Four for the first time in the Jay Wright era I think. It was really great at my HS since we were public and we did not have to recruit Scottie since he was local. I just remember he took our school by storm as a freshman. We were good my freshman year too but he made that team an instant contender. And he was a good guy off the court too. I remember him stopping by one time in my chemistry class and he was just like any other kid.

I remember that shot, yes. Was awesome.

The players I will actually know are in Texas, the Houston area. For instance, we lost the Texas state championship in 2012 due to <€^! Marcus Smart. He plays for the Celtics now and we have forgiven him. :) Kelly Oubre plays for Phoenix, he played for our biggest rival school (and had a horrible attitude). Andrew Harrison is at New Orleans, his twin, Aaron, is playing in Turkey. And another one of husband’s players plays for the Nigerian national team.

Yeah this probably is innocent. That said, no reason at all for the black face.

It is innocent if a 3 pointer had just been made, not so innocent if it is an after game celebration of a win over an opponent that had mostly black players.
